Western secures multiple NHS modular procurement contracts

Tyrone-based modular construction specialist Western has expanded its footprint in national procurement by securing its sixth major UK NHS Framework.

The company, which focuses on offsite and modular building solutions, has gained a place on the £1bn NHS Commercial Solutions Framework for temporary and permanent modular and prefabricated units across the public sector in England.

This follows Western’s inclusion in the LHC Modular Building (MB3) Framework, which covers permanent modular, healthcare, temporary hire, and refurbished buildings, along with other frameworks such as NHS SBS, ESPO, LCP Education, and OCS CCS Modular Buildings.

Western recently completed an £11m SNEE Endoscopy Unit at Colchester Hospital for the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. The 2,100m² facility was largely constructed offsite using a hybrid steel frame system with concrete floors, achieving stringent floor load and vibration standards for clinical use. The project, delivered in 67 weeks, integrated traditional construction methods with precision offsite manufacturing to ensure compliance with Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) and Health Building Note (HBN) standards.

The unit was fully designed using Building Information Modelling (BIM), allowing virtual walkthroughs for stakeholder engagement and design approvals. Complementary works included road widening, landscaping, and the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The facility received a BREEAM “Very Good” rating and an A1 Energy Rating, reflecting high sustainability and energy efficiency.

Western’s latest NHS SBS framework project, the £11.7m Corby Community Diagnostic Centre at Willowbrook Health Centre in Northamptonshire, is set to conduct approximately 93,000 diagnostic tests annually. The facility will provide MRI, CT, ultrasound, and comprehensive respiratory, heart, and blood diagnostics, easing pressure on main hospital sites and expediting patient access to critical diagnoses.
