Industry NewsWaterways Ireland begins procurement process for Grand Canal Dock redevelopment
Waterways Ireland has initiated a procurement process for advisory services linked to the potential redevelopment of City Block 19 at Grand Canal Dock, an area that includes the historic graving docks. For procurement and infrastructure stakeholders, the project signals continued demand for specialist consultancy, planning and heritage-led redevelopment expertise tied to strategic public assets.
Afloat reported that the procurement exercise concerns advisory support for assessing redevelopment opportunities at City Block 19, which forms part of the Grand Canal Dock graving dock area. According to Waterways Ireland, any future development would be intended for the public good and designed to maximise benefits for local communities and visitors.
The assessment will be carried out in line with Strategic Development Zone requirements governing the North Lotts and Grand Canal area, where City Block 19 has been designated for residential, commercial and community uses. Procurement requirements are also expected to incorporate planning regulations and conservation obligations relating to protected infrastructure, including quay walls, sea lock gates and the historic graving docks.
Grand Canal Dock remains a strategically significant regeneration zone in Dublin, combining transport, residential and commercial investment with maritime heritage considerations. Waterways Ireland said redevelopment proposals would require multiple approval stages involving both the organisation and its sponsor departments before progressing.
The organisation also confirmed continued engagement with local stakeholders, including discussions around the feasibility of restoring one of the graving docks for boat repair purposes. Parallel infrastructure works are already under way at Camden Lock, where upgrades to sea lock gates are intended to reopen Grand Canal Dock to tall ships and larger seafaring vessels.
For procurement teams, the initiative may generate future demand across consultancy, engineering, heritage conservation and enabling infrastructure categories should redevelopment plans advance.
