UK government should mandate retreads in public fleet procurement
Europe’s largest independent tyre retreader publishes submission to the Cabinet Office Consultation, arguing retreads further national environmental objectives, secure British jobs and deliver millions in taxpayer savings
Using 70 per cent less raw material than manufacturing a new tyre, Vaculug says retreads should be mandated in public fleet tyre procurement policy to support national environmental protection objectives.
Vaculug has argued that the fitment of retread tyres should be mandated on public sector fleets in the UK. The large independent retreader said such a policy change would deliver “substantial economic and environmental benefits while bolstering the UK’s domestic manufacturing sector.” It also cited international precedence for the requirement to fit retreads by public sector fleets, with several European Union member states, such as France, Germany and Italy, integrating retread requirements into national procurement policies and circular economy strategies. The impact of this can be huge for retreading, as Vaculug details in its submission.
