SOCOTEC UK and Ireland wins national water monitoring contract

SOCOTEC UK and Ireland, a provider of testing, inspection, and certification services, has secured its largest water quality monitoring contract with Yorkshire Water, worth tens of millions of pounds.

The deal covers an initial seven-year period, with an optional three-year extension, marking the first contract of its kind under Section 82 of the Environment Act 2021.

The national procurement project tasks SOCOTEC with delivering comprehensive water quality monitoring services, measuring water upstream and downstream of Yorkshire Water’s assets. Real-time data publication by 2030 is a key requirement, supporting regulatory compliance and transparency.

SOCOTEC’s Water Quality teams will oversee the installation, maintenance, and calibration of 736 monitoring stations across the first five years. The company has developed its AquaHawk suite of products specifically for Section 82 compliance, which will underpin data collection and reporting processes.

Matthew Marriott, CEO of SOCOTEC UK and Ireland, emphasised the contract’s scale and novelty, noting that the company will provide data available to the public within one hour of collection. The programme aligns with SOCOTEC’s strategic growth plans and commitment to environmental monitoring innovation.

Yorkshire Water highlighted the project’s importance for operational transparency and sustainability. Bethany Harris, Project Manager, described the collaboration as a step forward in providing accurate, real-time water data to communities, improving public access to environmental information.

SOCOTEC’s broader European operations reinforce its capability, with experience spanning potable water inspections in the Netherlands, surface water compliance, wastewater treatment, and hydro-ecological diagnostics across multiple countries.
