Petron Corporation, the oil refiner based in the Philippines, has purchased 2.48 million barrels of Russian crude oil for its refinery operations, diversifying crude oil sourcing beyond traditional Middle Eastern suppliers. The procurement represents significant volume for a single crude oil transaction, supporting feedstock requirements for Petron's refining capacity.

GMA News Online reported that the Russian crude oil purchase addresses Petron's need to secure competitively priced feedstock whilst managing supply chain diversification across multiple crude oil origins. Russian crude grades offer pricing advantages compared to benchmark Middle Eastern grades, particularly when factoring in transportation costs and quality specifications.

Petron operates refining facilities in the Philippines processing crude oil into petroleum products including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and petrochemicals for domestic and export markets. Crude oil procurement represents the largest cost component in refinery operations, with sourcing decisions driven by pricing, quality specifications, delivery logistics and refinery configuration.

The 2.48 million barrel purchase volume indicates a substantial cargo shipment, likely transported via very large crude carrier vessels from Russian export terminals to Petron's refinery intake facilities. Crude oil procurement contracts specify grade, quality parameters, delivery schedules and pricing mechanisms linked to benchmark crude oil indices.

Russian crude oil exports have faced restrictions and sanctions from Western countries following geopolitical developments, with Asian refiners including those in the Philippines, India and China increasing purchases to capture pricing discounts. Procurement decisions balance economic considerations against geopolitical and reputational factors.

Petron's crude oil sourcing strategy includes procurement from Middle Eastern producers, Russia and other origins to optimise refinery margins whilst managing supply security. The company evaluates crude oil purchases based on refinery yield optimisation, transportation costs, credit terms and crude grade compatibility with processing units.
