Mexico's energy ministry SENER has authorised CENACE, the national electricity grid operator, to purchase electricity for the national system through competitive procurement mechanisms. The authorisation enables CENACE to secure power supply contracts supporting grid reliability and electricity demand requirements across Mexico.

Mexico Business News reported that the procurement authority allows CENACE to conduct competitive processes for electricity purchases, addressing supply requirements and grid balancing needs. The authorisation framework specifies procurement procedures, pricing mechanisms and contract terms for electricity supply agreements.

CENACE operates as Mexico's independent system operator, responsible for grid management, electricity dispatch and wholesale market operations. The procurement authorisation expands CENACE's functions to include direct electricity purchasing, complementing its existing grid operation and market coordination roles.

Electricity procurement by grid operators typically addresses situations including reserve capacity requirements, emergency supply needs or market conditions requiring intervention to maintain system reliability. CENACE's purchasing authority provides flexibility to secure electricity through mechanisms beyond standard wholesale market transactions.

The authorisation follows regulatory frameworks governing electricity procurement in Mexico's reformed energy sector, where competitive processes determine pricing and contract allocation. SENER's approval establishes the legal basis for CENACE to conduct procurement whilst maintaining transparency and competitive principles.

Mexico's electricity sector includes generation from state-owned companies, private generators and independent power producers, with CENACE coordinating dispatch based on economic merit order and grid requirements. Direct procurement authority enables CENACE to supplement market mechanisms when necessary to ensure supply adequacy.

The procurement framework includes provisions for competitive bidding, price evaluation and contract award criteria aligned with Mexico's energy sector regulations. CENACE's purchasing activities will operate under oversight from SENER and energy regulatory agencies ensuring compliance with procurement standards.
