MetroLink prepares major works to accelerate in 2026
Dublin’s MetroLink project is set to accelerate in 2026 following the resolution of outstanding issues, giving project managers and the market clarity to advance critical infrastructure work.
Seán Sweeney, MetroLink programme director, said the focus now turns to “enabling works and advancing procurement, with contract notices for the main civil works packages to be issued” in the first quarter of the year.
The 19km mostly underground rail line will link Swords to Charlemont via Dublin Airport, Ballymun, Glasnevin, O’Connell Street, and St Stephen’s Green, with a projected cost north of €10 billion. The development is expected to reduce city centre to airport travel to 20 minutes, with service operational by the mid-2030s.
The project had faced delays due to disputes with Dartmouth Square West residents, which were resolved through mediation and a proposed property purchase by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Sweeney confirmed that with these matters “resolved”, the project now benefits from a “clean planning decision” providing certainty for market engagement.
The government has committed dedicated funding and is establishing a delivery body to oversee construction, while the National Transport Authority welcomed the withdrawal of these disputes as essential to maintaining project momentum. Lorcan O’Connor, CEO of TII, noted he had met with residents and appreciated their “constructive approach, which ultimately led to agreements that work for all sides.”
Sweeney emphasised the strategic importance of MetroLink, stating, “MetroLink is a once-in-a-generation investment in Ireland’s public transport network,” and confirmed that public representatives will continue to be updated as enabling works and civil contracts advance.
The next steps involve issuing civil works contracts and coordinating with supply chains to ensure delivery readiness for this flagship national infrastructure project.
