Ireland’s procurement shift underscores leadership in sustainable ICT

Ireland’s Office of Government Procurement (OGP) has become the latest public body to join the Circular and Fair ICT Pact (CFIT), reaffirming its commitment to using procurement as a force for sustainability and innovation. The agreement, formalised at CFIT’s in-person meeting in Copenhagen, positions Ireland as a key player in embedding circular principles into ICT supply chains.

The OGP’s participation builds on its earlier collaboration with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) and highlights how strategic procurement can translate policy ambitions into measurable action. Central to this effort is Ireland’s framework for procuring remanufactured laptops, a model that demonstrates how public tenders can balance quality, transparency, and environmental responsibility while tackling challenges such as supply consistency and product differentiation.

This initiative reflects a growing European momentum to reimagine ICT procurement—moving beyond price-driven decision-making towards long-term value creation and carbon reduction. By engaging through CFIT, Ireland joins an influential network including representatives from Canada, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK, all working to redefine how public contracts can shape greener digital economies.

Ireland’s leadership in this space signals a broader shift across the public sector: procurement is no longer just an operational function but a lever for sustainable transformation.
