Ireland strengthens sustainable ICT through public procurement
Ireland’s Office of Government Procurement (OGP) has formally joined the CFIT Pact, reinforcing how strategic public procurement can drive sustainability and circularity in the ICT sector. This step follows the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications’ coordinating role last year, connecting policy with actionable procurement initiatives.
A key example of OGP’s approach is its framework for procuring remanufactured laptops. The programme addresses practical challenges such as maintaining product quality, managing supply volumes, differentiating between remanufactured and refurbished devices, and ensuring transparency for informed decisions. These efforts not only help reduce electronic waste but also advance national circular economy objectives.
The CFIT Steering Committee, comprising representatives from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK, will guide the programme’s direction. Ireland’s contribution combines on-the-ground procurement expertise with strategic insight, highlighting how cross-border collaboration can embed circularity and fairness in public sector ICT procurement.
By sharing frameworks, insights, and experience, participating countries can create scalable approaches that accelerate sustainable technology adoption. Ireland’s active engagement illustrates the tangible impact that informed procurement decisions can have on driving long-term sector-wide change.
