Ireland has selected France as its preferred partner for acquiring new armored vehicles under the Armoured Fleet Programme, marking a significant development in the modernisation of the Irish Defence Forces. The procurement, announced by Defence Minister Helen McEntee on 24 February, involves equipping the Irish Army with 4×4 and 6×6 armored vehicles derived from France's SCORPION Program.

SSB Crack News reported that the selection resulted from a thorough evaluation of available market options, with Ireland establishing a direct State-to-State partnership with France to facilitate negotiations for modernising Ireland's land fleet and replacing outdated systems. No contract has been awarded at this stage, with further negotiations required to determine fleet size, roles, timelines and costs under European Union defense procurement regulations.

Minister McEntee said: "The development of a modern armored fleet is imperative within the €1.7 billion National Development Plan for the Defence Forces." She emphasised the necessity of providing personnel with adequate protection, mobility and capabilities for both domestic and overseas operations.

Dublin is contemplating acquisition of up to 400 vehicles to replace an aging fleet including Piranha III models from General Dynamics and RG-32M vehicles from Denel. Key vehicles of interest within the SCORPION program include the EBRC Jaguar, VBMR Griffon and VBMR-L Serval armored vehicles, alongside CAESAR artillery systems currently operational in the French Army.

The forthcoming agreement may be structured across multiple phases, potentially exceeding €1 billion, with final figures dependent on project scope. Strategic analyses completed between 2024 and 2025 suggest the SCORPION program may fulfil the full spectrum of capabilities required by Ireland's military.
