Industry NewsIreland confirms €173.9m procurement for 100 new electric DART trains
Ireland has confirmed a €173.9 million investment to procure 100 new electric DART trains for Dublin's rail network, marking a significant expansion and modernisation of the capital's public transport infrastructure. The fleet procurement will replace aging trains whilst expanding capacity across the DART system, supporting both commuter services and tourism accessibility.
Travel and Tour World reported that the new electric trains will enhance reliability, passenger comfort and operational efficiency across Dublin's coastal and city rail routes. The investment forms part of Ireland's broader public transport modernisation programme, addressing capacity constraints and service quality challenges on the DART network.
The procurement covers design, manufacture and delivery of electric multiple unit trains configured for Dublin's DART infrastructure, including compatibility with existing electrification systems and platform specifications. The trains will feature modern passenger amenities including air conditioning, improved accessibility, real-time passenger information systems and enhanced capacity for bicycles and luggage.
Iarnród Éireann, Ireland's state-owned railway operator, will oversee the procurement process and fleet introduction. The new trains will enable increased service frequency, longer formations and improved reliability across the DART network, which serves over 16 million passenger journeys annually.
The DART system connects Dublin city centre with coastal communities from Malahide and Howth in the north to Greystones in the south, providing critical commuter services whilst supporting tourism access to coastal attractions and visitor destinations. Fleet modernisation aims to improve service attractiveness for both regular commuters and tourists visiting Dublin.
The €173.9 million investment reflects government commitment to public transport infrastructure as part of climate action objectives and urban mobility strategies. Electric train procurement supports decarbonisation targets whilst addressing capacity requirements driven by population growth and tourism demand.
