Plans for Ireland's new supercomputer CASPIR have advanced to the next procurement stage, progressing the development of national research computing infrastructure. The facility will provide high-performance computing capabilities for Irish research institutions, supporting computational research across science, engineering and data-intensive disciplines.

Silicon Republic reported that CASPIR (Centre for Advanced Scientific Processing, Innovation and Research) represents significant investment in Ireland's research infrastructure, addressing capacity constraints in high-performance computing availability for academic and research organisations. The procurement covers supercomputer hardware, software, data storage systems and associated infrastructure.

The facility will serve researchers across Irish universities and institutes requiring computational power for applications including climate modelling, drug discovery, materials science, artificial intelligence and genomics research. Access to national supercomputing facilities enables Irish researchers to compete internationally whilst supporting industry collaboration on computationally intensive projects.

The procurement process evaluates potential suppliers on technical specifications including processing power, energy efficiency, cooling systems and scalability. Supercomputer installations require substantial infrastructure including power supply, cooling capacity and physical space, with operational costs driven by electricity consumption and maintenance requirements.

CASPIR will be hosted at a dedicated facility providing the environmental controls, power capacity and network connectivity required for supercomputing operations. The location selection considered factors including power supply reliability, cooling infrastructure, fibre optic connectivity and proximity to research institutions.

The project aligns with Ireland's national research strategy and European initiatives to strengthen computational research capabilities across member states. Access to supercomputing resources supports research competitiveness whilst enabling participation in international collaborative projects requiring high-performance computing capabilities.

The procurement timeline includes technical evaluation, contract negotiation and phased implementation, with commissioning scheduled to enable initial user access whilst final capacity installations proceed. The facility will operate under access policies enabling research project applications from eligible institutions.
