Iarnród Éireann Named Sustainable Procurement Team of the Year at National Procurement Awards 2025
Iarnród Éireann won the Sustainable Procurement Team of the Year title at the National Procurement Awards 2025 held just last month, recognised for its cross-departmental approach to advancing sustainable rail freight.
The organisation’s procurement strategy, rooted in its ‘One Team’ ethos, delivered measurable environmental impact, notably through the Rail Freight Fleet Project, which aligned national policy objectives with long-term corporate value.
Judges commended the team’s data-driven and collaborative methodology, citing strong governance and supplier engagement as central to its success.
“Their innovative strategies, ranging from incentivising low-carbon practices to lifecycle costing have delivered tangible results, including a 25,000-tonne reduction in CO₂ emissions,” the judges said. “Programs like the Rail Freight Strategy 2040 and CIF Carbon Calculator demonstrate clear leadership in driving measurable, long-term environmental impact.”
Iarnród Éireann’s achievement reflects the rising standards across the National Procurement Awards, where organisations are increasingly demonstrating strategic integration of sustainability, commercial discipline and long-horizon planning. Their performance sits within a wider progression of teams elevating procurement into a strategic driver of environmental and operational value.
As the sector continues to evolve, the 2025 win underscores the momentum shaping the next awards cycle, particularly as organisations intensify efforts to embed decarbonisation into supply chain decision-making.
Who will emerge as the Sustainable Procurement Team of the Year in 2026? The next edition of the National Procurement Awards will once again bring together leaders from across Ireland’s procurement and supply chain community, providing a platform to showcase innovation, resilience and operational excellence.
