Haryana state government in India has commenced mustard procurement operations, with wheat procurement scheduled to begin on 1 April, supporting farmer income through minimum support price purchases. The procurement programme enables farmers to sell crops to government agencies at guaranteed prices, providing price stability during harvest seasons when market rates typically decline.

Business Standard reported that Haryana operates as a major agricultural procurement hub in India, purchasing significant volumes of wheat, mustard and other crops from farmers across the state. The procurement system involves government agencies establishing purchasing centres where farmers deliver produce meeting quality specifications for purchase at minimum support prices.

Mustard procurement has commenced ahead of the peak harvest period, with purchasing centres operating across Haryana's mustard-growing districts. The procurement infrastructure includes weighing facilities, quality testing equipment and storage capacity to handle incoming volumes whilst ensuring timely farmer payments.

Wheat procurement beginning on 1 April coincides with the main wheat harvest season in northern India, with Haryana representing one of the country's largest wheat-producing states. Government procurement supports national food security objectives by building buffer stocks for public distribution systems and market stabilisation interventions.

Minimum support prices are set annually by India's central government based on production cost assessments and agricultural policy objectives. The prices provide farmers with income assurance whilst enabling government to influence cropping patterns through relative price signals across different crops.

Procurement operations require coordination across multiple agencies including state agriculture departments, food corporations and logistics providers managing transportation and storage. The scale of operations during peak harvest periods necessitates deployment of additional staff, temporary storage facilities and accelerated payment processing systems.
