Parks Canada has contracted Greenspace Construction Inc., a Greater Toronto Area–based environmental construction firm, to implement the Rouge Beach and Marsh Improvements Project at Rouge National Urban Park.

The $9.47 million (€8.12m) contract covers habitat restoration, visitor facility upgrades, and accessibility improvements in one of Canada’s most visited urban parks.

The project spans a 2.3-kilometre formalised trail linking Rouge Beach to the Mast Trail, ecological restoration across Rouge Marsh, improvements to the upper beach parking including a permanent washroom facility, and upgrades to the trailhead entrance with accessible ramps. The lower beach parking lot will be decommissioned and re-naturalised. Elevated boardwalks and bridges will protect sensitive wetlands while providing safe access.

“The Rouge Beach Improvements Project will restore vital habitats, enhance the visitor experience and accessibility, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Canada’s first national urban park – keeping it a vibrant, healthy space for both wildlife and people alike,” said Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature Julie Dabrusin.

Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree added, “Led by Parks Canada, this project will strengthen the park’s ecological integrity and offer visitors and local communities a new trail linking the Lake Ontario shoreline to the popular Mast Trail.”

Rouge National Urban Park covers over 79 square kilometres in the Greater Toronto Area, hosting more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, working farms, and Indigenous heritage sites. Since its establishment in 2015, the park has achieved 137 restoration projects, 23 km of new trails, and a $21 million (€18m) investment in a future visitor, learning, and community centre.
