Industry NewsDublin launches automated metro procurement for MetroLink infrastructure
Transport Infrastructure Ireland has launched procurement for Dublin's automated MetroLink system, inviting bids for trains, track and station infrastructure across a 19-kilometre route connecting Swords to Charlemont. The contract covers delivery of Ireland's first fully automated metro, including rolling stock, railway systems and station fit-out for 16 stations.
Railway Gazette reported that the procurement follows completion of major civils contract awards for tunnelling and underground station construction. The railway systems and rolling stock packages represent critical components enabling metro operations, with automated train control, signalling, power supply and communications infrastructure required for driverless operations.
The procurement seeks suppliers capable of delivering integrated metro systems including track installation, overhead power supply, platform screen doors, automated train operation technology and fleet management systems. Rolling stock specifications require driverless capability, high-frequency operations and capacity to handle anticipated passenger volumes across the Dublin metro corridor.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland's procurement strategy separates civil works from railway systems and rolling stock, enabling specialist contractors to focus on their core capabilities whilst maintaining overall project coordination. The approach has been used successfully on metro projects globally, allowing tunnelling specialists and systems integrators to work concurrently.
Automated metro technology eliminates driver requirements, enabling higher service frequencies, consistent journey times and reduced operational costs compared to conventional metro systems. Platform screen doors provide safety barriers between passengers and tracks, essential for automated operations without onboard staff.
The MetroLink procurement attracts international rolling stock manufacturers and systems integrators with automated metro experience including suppliers to Paris, Copenhagen, Dubai and Singapore driverless metro systems. Bidders must demonstrate capability in delivering fully integrated automated railway systems meeting European safety and interoperability standards.
