BHP has signed early-stage deals with Chinese battery leaders CATL and BYD to explore electrification across its mining and transport operations globally. The collaborations aim to develop battery-powered heavy equipment, electric locomotives, and on-site electric vehicles—potentially slashing diesel use and operational emissions.

The partnerships will also explore fast-charging tech and battery recycling, positioning BHP to reduce both carbon output and power costs. While the miner has committed to a 30% reduction in operational emissions by 2030, its targets remain less ambitious than some of its global peers.

This move signals a shift in procurement strategy, with battery innovation now squarely on the agenda for cost efficiency and carbon reduction in mining logistics and fleet operations.
