Industry NewsAlstom strengthens supplier partnerships to support resilient procurement strategies
Rail manufacturer Alstom has reinforced the importance of supplier engagement and strategic sourcing through a supplier event focused on strengthening long-term procurement performance and improving supply chain resilience across the UK and Ireland.
The company’s Supplier Day and Corporate Social Responsibility Awards brought together more than 200 industry participants, including more than 120 suppliers from Britain and Ireland. The event was designed to recognise supplier contributions while encouraging closer collaboration across procurement, operational delivery and sustainability initiatives.
According to Alstom, supplier strategy remains central to supporting business continuity and maintaining competitiveness in a market increasingly shaped by supply chain volatility, cost pressures and changing customer expectations. The company reported allocating more than £720m across almost 1,300 British businesses during the last year, with approximately 33% of spending directed towards UK-based small and medium-sized enterprises.
Alstom also stated that around 90% of its operational procurement expenditure supports British suppliers and that 80% of suppliers within its network are based in the UK. Approximately half of those suppliers are SMEs, demonstrating the role smaller organisations continue to play in supporting industrial delivery capacity and innovation.
Alongside spend allocation, the company highlighted the importance of deeper supplier relationships and longer-term commercial arrangements to improve delivery certainty and reduce procurement risk. Procurement models that encourage continuity and stronger supplier alignment are increasingly being adopted across industries seeking greater stability and supply assurance.
The supplier event also incorporated awards recognising contributions linked to climate action, health and wellbeing, equal opportunity and economic impact. While framed through corporate responsibility objectives, the awards reflect a broader procurement trend of evaluating supplier performance beyond traditional cost and delivery measures.
The announcement aligns with wider developments across procurement and supply chain management, where organisations are placing greater emphasis on supplier resilience, localisation strategies, SME engagement and sustainable sourcing practices. As market uncertainty continues, supplier relationship management is becoming an increasingly strategic function that supports operational performance and long-term business outcomes.
